Militia logic: We're enforcing laws we like and defying laws we don't to fight lawlessness

A spokesman for a militia group patrolling the U.S. border characterized the mission as “disciplined and professional,” but he also suggested they intended to embarrass public officials in an act of open rebellion.

InfoWars reporter Joe Biggs interviewed a public relations officer for Operation Secure Our Border outside the Alamo in San Antonio, Texas, to discuss the armed volunteers drawn to the border with Mexico, where thousands of migrants have crossed in recent months.

The public relations officer, who was not identified by InfoWars, claimed at least 75 percent of the border agents welcomed the militia members’ presence, but he said they were under orders not to assist the volunteers.

“You can immediately sense the discontinuity between the guy that’s in the field and their immediate supervision level -- it’s very, very apparent,” the militia spokesman said. “Their equipment and what their status and profile is, is more like a neighborhood watch. There are guys with blazers and badges and maybe a pistol, and they’re not showing anything more.”

The spokesman said border agents seemed to be impressed with their weaponry and had given them “head nods” to signal their approval.

Biggs, the InfoWars reporter, asked a series of leading questions to allow the militia spokesman to characterize the volunteers as patriotic, everyday Americans operating under a sense of civic duty – rather than armed extremists, as both agreed mainstream media had reported.

“These are great, good-hearted Americans,” the spokesman said. “For the most part, they’re interested in having a lawful, constitutional America actually here on the ground, that you can see it in operation. They take that, and they make it active and real in everyday life. You gather people together with that common vision background, these are generous people with good decision-making and they have good discipline.”

The group's self-described commander -- whose name is listed as a contact for donations on the InfoWars video post -- encouraged militia members in a since-removed video to take back national sovereignty by pointing guns at suspected undocumented immigrants.

“You see an illegal,” said Chris Davis in the 14-minute video. “You point your gun dead at him, right between his eyes, and you say, ‘Get back across the border or you will be shot.’”

The militia spokesman conceded the operation could attract some armed volunteers who lacked discipline and judgment, but he dismissed those concerns.

“As soon as you put a band of brothers together and people are picking up arms to defend themselves, and you’re going to count on the guy next to you – this becomes a self-licking ice cream cone about that fast,” the spokesman said, snapping his fingers. “Now what I mean by that is, we’re going to remove people that don’t have that capacity, that self-discipline and that kind of heart and spirit.”

He said the border operation was exactly what the Founding Fathers had in mind when they mentioned well-regulated militias in the Second Amendment.

“If there’s a way to lawfully and forcefully compel politicians -- people that have authority -- to actually do their job in the right way, then it’s going to take a little edgy action,” the militia spokesman said. “I understand people in the public are going to be uncomfortable with the idea that that has to be done, but you’re talking to a representative of a group of people that understand that on occasion you can operate completely within the law but you can be forceful, and when somebody says – at that point in time – when somebody says you’re going to do ‘X,’ and you say no, you’re going to have the ability to back it.”

“I would say that most of them have reached a point that’s intolerable,” he continued. “They’re saying no, and then they’re going to back it. We will not allow the border area, the state of Texas and the subsequent infection of the whole United States to take our Constitution away. We just won’t let it happen.”

The InfoWars reporter said most militia members were not opposed to immigration, in general, and the spokesman agreed.

“If you take a poison in, you take too much poison in, it kills it,” the militia spokesman said. “The poison isn’t the immigration -- that’s what built this country, and we’re going to be fine with immigration. The poison is the lawlessness, the absolute lawlessness.”

“You either have an illegal immigration problem or you have a drug problem or you have two things that are working together, and they’re using both of them to inject lawlessness,” he continued. “That would be the major point of our mission description and the major point of what most people are asking for. They’re not asking to participate or make a more lawless situation, they’re asking for the laws that we have to be enforced – and they will step back. But this ought to be embarrassing to our leadership that people have now reached the point where they say, ‘I will stand and I will do what you won’t do.’”
