Disbelief as Trump invokes Bush's infamous 'Mission Accomplished' gaffe to tout his war

President Donald Trump drew a wave of disbelief after posting an image that resurrects one of the most mocked moments in modern presidential history and pinned it to his own war with Iran.

On Wednesday morning, Trump shared an AI-generated image to Truth Social showing himself striding through smoke and fire, flanked by fighter jets, an aircraft carrier and American flags. At his feet sit two weathered signs. One reads "MISSION NOT ACCOMPLISHED" over the years 2001 through 2021, set beside a somber portrait of George W. Bush. The other declares "MISSION ACCOMPLISHED 2026," paired with an image of Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

Critics quickly pointed out that "Mission Accomplished" is an infamous cautionary tale.

Bush stood beneath a banner bearing those words aboard an aircraft carrier in 2003 as he heralded the end of major combat in Iraq. The war ground on for years, and the image haunted him for the rest of his presidency.

The US struck Iran even after Trump announced a ceasefire and a senior official dismissed the campaign as "doomed" because "we went in with no real mission." One report found the strikes may have turbocharged Iran's nuclear ambitions.

The reactions poured in.

Historian and columnist Max Boot wrote that Trump "doesn't seem to realize that 'Mission Accomplished' became a punchline" after Bush's 2003 speech, adding, "Unless Trump's goal was to have Iran close the Strait of Hormuz, it's hard to imagine what 'mission' he has accomplished."

Ex-CNN anchor Jim Acosta called the post "delusional" and said it "should be covered as such."

Rep. Ted Lieu described it as "the white flag of surrender by trump," writing that the president is "not even trying anymore," while analyst Jeff Davies called it "deranged to use this given its impact on bush."

Former diplomat Brett Bruen cut to the heart of it, questioning, "What mission was actually accomplished?"
