Mississippi Democratic Senate nominee Scott Colom says President Donald Trump’s visit to the state is a sign that Republicans are worried, and he’s using it to raise money.
“Just a few nights ago Donald Trump got on stage at his Mississippi rally, where he immediately started spreading hate and lies about me and this campaign,” Colom wrote in a fundraising email sent Wednesday.
Trump held a rally Monday at Crossroads Arena in Corinth to boost Sen. Cindy Hyde-Smith (R-Miss.), whom Colom is trying to unseat in a race that has tightened in a state Republicans usually take for granted.
“I think we’re under their skin,” Colom wrote. “I know we must be doing something right if the President of the United States is coming to Mississippi to talk about me — but it means that the entire Republican party is about to come crashing down against us.”
Colom said Trump “did tell the truth about one thing”: that the only reason he came to Mississippi was to “make sure” Hyde-Smith wins.
“But bad news for him, no matter how much he tries to bail Cindy out, polls show this race is a statistical tie and that our campaign has the momentum,” Colom wrote.
He predicted the attacks from “the President, Cindy Hyde-Smith, and their billionaire buddies” will keep coming before Election Day on Nov. 3.
“They’re desperate and pulling out all their tricks,” he wrote.
Colom, a district attorney in northeast Mississippi, has drawn national Democratic attention in the final stretch of the race. Former Vice President Kamala Harris rallied with him in Columbus last week. If he wins, he would be the first Democrat to represent Mississippi in the U.S. Senate since the late 1980s, and its first Black senator since Reconstruction.
