An Oklahoma woman was accidentally shot and killed Monday evening by her toddler son.
Neighbors said the 26-year-old east Tulsa woman, whose name was not released, was home with her 3-year-old son and a 1-year-old daughter when the boy found a high-caliber handgun underneath a couch.
The child managed to pull the trigger, police said, and his mother was shot once in the head as she changed the baby’s diaper.
The woman’s mother-in-law, who also lives with the family, returned home to find the woman had been shot and called for help.
She was taken to an area hospital and listed in grave condition, but she died shortly after 5:30 p.m.
Police said the boy kept saying, “Mommy shot,” as officers buckled him into a squad car.
The boy apparently tried to escape the house before his grandmother arrived.
Child specialists spoke with the boy to help determine what led to the shooting.
Police confirmed the mother was in the Army, and her husband is a truck driver who was working out of state at the time of the shooting.
Investigators said other guns were in the home, but they were not out in the open.
The shooting remains under investigation.
