Monkey wearing coat and diapers found in Toronto Ikea parking lot

A monkey wearing a shearling coat and diapers was found wandering around an Ikea parking lot in Toronto, reported the CBC.

The monkey's owner, who was shopping at the home and furniture store, put the monkey in a crate inside her car, but it managed to escape. "It's a smart monkey," Toronto Police Sgt. Ed Dzingala told the CBC.

The woman who believes she was the first to spot the animal told the CBC, "It was the weirdest thing. I thought I was going insane."

"It seemed like it was screaming around for someone [it] new. It was sad," she said.

The monkey is reportedly with animal services. The CBC reported around 3:30pm that no charges had been filed, but Tom Podolec, a photojournalist for CTV News Toronto, tweeted around 7:00 p.m. on Sunday, "Owners of #IkeaMonkey came forward; charged with having a prohibited animal; $240 fine. Will not get monkey back" and "#IkeaMonkey is a Rhesus Macaque Monkey Approx. 7 months old. In good health; stressed. Jacket is wool and said to be his favourite."

The newly created parody Twitter handle @IkeaMonkey has been tweeting for the past few hours. "Please do not trivialize the plight of the urban primate community," it tweeted Sunday afternoon.
