Morning Joe scorches ‘stupid’ GOP governors for acting recklessly on COVID just to irritate liberals
MSNBC's Joe Scarborough blasted Texas Gov. Greg Abbott for reopening his state despite the coronavirus pandemic that continues to ravage the nation.
The "Morning Joe" host suggested Abbott was lifting the mask mandate and other COVID-19 restrictions to distract from his disastrous handling of the winter storms last month that caused prolonged power outages, death and misery, and Scarborough said that recklessness and irresponsibility is a hallmark of Republican governance.
"You look at CPAC and the people that got the biggest cheers there -- not the people that are going to win elections, mind you -- but the people who got the biggest cheers there were the people most reckless and irresponsible," Scarborough said. "[Florida Gov.] Ron DeSantis, he used his stupidity on addressing COVID as actually his calling card for running for president in 2024. He's ahead in a lot of those straw polls in CPAC."
"[South Dakota Gov.] Kristi Noem was stupid enough, thought she was cool enough on the Fourth of July saying we're having this big event, no, you don't have to wear masks and no, there's not going to be social distancing when we're obviously, like now, we're the middle of it," he added. "Herman Cain had just passed away or gotten it, but it was an especially reckless time for her to be that cavalier about it, and of course, rates in her state have been spiking -- but she just doesn't care."
Scarborough said that carelessness and recklessness is based in the one animating principal that remains in the conservative movement.
"She doesn't care at all because it's all at the end of the day about owning the libs," Scarborough said, "and to these I just -- I don't even know how to describe them. To these demagogues owning the libs means owning science, owning medicine, owning reason, owning rationality. It is a dead-end street for Donald Trump's Republican Party. It's something the Wall Street Journal editorial page wrote about yesterday, but certainly not the memo Greg Abbott got yesterday."
