MS NOW's Joe Scarborough dumped cold water on an agreement President Donald Trump has reached to end his war in Iran.
Iranian officials confirmed an agreement has been finalized, and Trump has said Strait of Hormuz will reopen Friday once the deal has been signed, but the "Morning Joe" host slammed the president for starting the war in the first place and questioned what had been gained in relation to the steep cost.
"Everybody around these talksbelieve that 60 days in,they're going to start chargingtolls, and then you look at thesanctions relief they're goingto get, which, again, the Trumpadministration, as you know, constantly berated Joe Biden'sadministration for liftingsanctions against Iran fromtime to time," Scarborough said. "They're going todo it, and we have talk ofreconstruction. If Iran behaveswell down the road, I mean ... and again, thedevil's in the details. We'rereally glad there's apossibility that this war, which should have never started, comes to an end."
"But let's justtell it like it is, whether ifpeople want to be lied to, goto another channel because I can tell you whichchannel to go to," Scarborough added. "They will belying through your teeth to youright now telling you how wonderful this is. But if youwant to know the truth ofwhat's happening right here, the fact is, peoplein the neighborhood around Iranhave every reason to be scaredto death right now because thisis a more radical, a moreenraged and soon to be richer Iran thanks to this war."
Co-host Jonathan Lemire agreed and echoed Scarborough's comments.
"Yeah, well, tell it like itis," Lemire agreed. "This is a defeat for the United States. Iran is strongernow than they were at thebeginning of the war. We heard, how often [have] we heard not just President Trump complainingabout the sanctions relief thatthe Biden administration gave Iran, but think about how thepallets of cash that he wouldblast the Obama team forsending Tehran, that's going tobe dwarfed by the amount ofmoney that's likely going therenow on the Strait of Hormuz. Not only is A., after 60 days, Iran has indicated they believethey'll charge for tolls, but B.,despite President Trump'scelebration last night aboutthe strait being open and freefor everyone to use. Thatobviously, that's temporary, butalso it already was before thewar. That was the statusquo that's how things existed. He made things worse."
"We nowhave a hardline regime, embittered and certainly noreason to ever trust the United States again because we keepbombing them during the midstof negotiations," Lemire added. "Let's thinkabout the cost here, not justthe billions upon billions interms of dollars the United States spent, but also thelives lost civilians, includinga girls school and the firsthours of the war. This is asignificant you know, the United States lookssignificantly weaker right nowin that region than before, and Iran's ability to close the Strait of Hormuz and hit its neighbors seems, you know, unchecked."
