MSNBC analyst slams new acting AG for promoting 'pro-Trump conspiracies'

A Daily Beast reporter whose colleagues broke news that new acting attorney general Matthew Whitaker claimed there was "no collusion" between Donald Trump and Russia went on MSNBC to discuss the story — and had some thoughts on what the claim sounded like.

"What struck us and I think should strike a lot of people is a year-and-a-half before [Whitaker] came into the position to oversee the [Robert] Mueller probe, he declared, 'The truth is there was no collusion with the Russians and the Trump campaign,'" the Beast's Sam Stein told MSNBC.

The reporter noted that the man who was controversially appointed to serve as acting attorney general appeared to have "predetermined the outcome of the investigation that he’s now overseeing."

Stein also noted that in the SiriusXM interview from when Whitaker was a conservative pundit prior to joining the Justice Department, the former U.S. attorney also "said the only collusion was between Hillary Clinton and the Russians."

"These are sort of these conspiracy theories that you see from pro-Trump media personalities, not the chief law enforcement official of the country — let alone someone who is overseeing the probe looking into this very question," Stein said.
