MSNBC guest: The GOP's 'cavalry is not coming' to save 'white nationalist' Steve King

The GOP his finally woken up to Iowa Republican Steve King's racist statements and associates — and they're not going to bail him out.

MSNBC’s Chris Hayes described the congressman as a “white nationalist" during in an interview with ThinkProgress founder Judd Legum. He then noted there are ads running in his district “calling him ‘Klan and neo-Nazi approved.'”

The host went on to note that although the party has "known all along" about King's racist proclivities, the timing of National Republican Congressional Committee chairman Steve Stivers' rebuke — a week before the midterms — is "interesting."

"Yeah, the cavalry is not coming," Legum said. "I think Stivers believes that King is making his job more difficult in some of the other districts that remain competitive by being a face of the Republican Party who's adopting these really abhorrent positions."

The ThinkProgress founder noted that other Republican leaders like House Speaker Paul Ryan (R-WI) still haven't spoken out against King.

"Steve King is still pretty entrenched in the House, in the Republican [Party], still has his committee assignments," Legum said.
