Mueller’s top prosecutor speculates on why Michael Cohen is meeting with prosecutors for the 8th time
A former top prosecutor for special counsel Robert Mueller has some insights on why the Manhattan prosecutor's office brought Michael Cohen in for an eighth interview.
Andrew Weissmann told MSNBC host Nicolle Wallace that Cohen certainly isn't speaking to Manhattan District Attorney Cy Vance Jr. for fun. These questions are likely about the new evidence obtained in the Trump financial investigation.
"This is speculation, but I think that they have to be asking Michael Cohen about the documents that they just got from the Trump accounting firm," Weissmann explained. "These are the documents that the Manhattan district attorney's office has fought for and gone to the Supreme Court twice and won twice and finally has it in their possession, and I'm sure they are trying to get any leads, any information and see if there's any sort of intel they can gather from Michael Cohen on those documents."
Wallace asked if Weissmann thought there was such intelligence in the documents.
"You know, I suspect that he has some inside information," he said. "I still do not think he will end up being a witness for them, because he has a whole host of baggage, but I think you want to exhaust all information so that you can pursue any and all leads. I am confident that this is not the only person that they are speaking to. This may just be the only person they're speaking to who is perfectly willing to talk to the public about what he is doing."
In an interview, last week, before it was revealed Cohen was meeting with prosecutors for the eighth time, former White House counsel John Dean noted that the news certainly isn't good for Trump.
"You do not visit a prosecutor's office seven times if they are not planning to indict those about whom you have knowledge," Dean explained.
