Mueller requests meeting with Russian pop star who set up infamous 2016 Trump Tower meeting: report
August 02, 2018
Emin Agalarov, the Russian pop star who helped arrange the infamous 2016 Trump Tower meeting between President Donald Trump's campaign and Russian officials, is now in the crosshairs of special counsel Robert Mueller's probe.
NBC News reports that Mueller's office has requested an interview with Agalarov, who last year emerged as a key figure in possible efforts by the Russian government to coordinate with Trump's campaign.
Scott Balber, the attorney representing Agalarov, tells NBC News that conversations with Mueller's team are "ongoing" but he warns that it's "unclear how this will play out."
Agalarov is the son of Russian billionaire Aras Agalarov, who has close ties to Russian President Vladimir Putin. The Agalarov family was also central in striking a deal to bring Trump's Miss Universe pageant to Moscow in 2013.
Years after the Miss Universe pageant, Agalarov publicist Rob Goldstone reached out to Donald Trump Jr. on behalf of the family to arrange a meeting with Russian officials in which they would offer dirt on then-rival candidate Hillary Clinton in the months before the 2016 presidential election.
"I love it!" Trump Jr. replied.
