'Complete lie on almost every metric': Nancy Mace fact-checked over Trump praise

Rep. Nancy Mace knows the economy was better under former President Donald Trump because that’s what voters tell her, she said on Fox News Monday.

“Everything was better under Trump by every measure, every barometer” the South Carolina Republican affirmed with a smile. “That is what I hear day in, day out.”

In a rare turn of events, liberals who viewed the footage on X agreed with the Fox News host who said she found Mace’s economic interpretation “really interesting.”

But they also had questions about what measures and barometers Mace was checking.

As MSNBC legal analyst Brian Tyler Cohen noted, and as is confirmed by the nonpartisan group FactCheck.org, the U.S. under the Trump administration lost 2.9 million jobs, saw the unemployment rate rise to 6.3 percent and took on $7.8 trillion in debt.

In comparison, the U.S. under the Biden Administration added 13.2 million jobs (as of July 2023) saw the unemployment rate drop this month to 3.7 percent and has taken on about $6.3 trillion in debt (as compared to the current debt and the $27 trillion debt Biden inherited in 2021).

“Maybe not every measurement,” Cohen replied.

Adam Goldberg, looking at Trump’s “anemic” Gross Domestic Product growth that never surpassed 3 percent, called the statement, “a complete lie on almost every metric.”

Other X users took umbrage with Mace’s analysis, which they argued ignored a metric that surpassed political or economic data.

“When Trump was President, we had the biggest pandemic in over 100 years,” wrote Machine Pun Kelly, referring to the coronavirus outbreak that claimed more than 350,000 lives in 2020 alone, according to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention data.

“400,000 Americans might differ,” wrote Mrs. Betty Bowers about those killed in the pandemic.

“But they can't.”
