National Enquirer asked DOJ on whether they needed register as a foreign agent

On Monday, the Wall Street Journalreported that American Media Inc., which owns the National Enquirer, had asked the Justice Department if they'd have to register as a foreign entity after publishing a story celebrating Crown Prince Mohammad Bin Salman. Salman is accused of ordering the murder of Washington Post columnist Jamal Khashoggi.

Over the weekend, the National Enquirer published personal texts between Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos and his girlfriend.

Prior to that, Bezos had published a post on Medium decrying the Enquirer's methods, which seemed to suggest they were holding the "sexts" hostage to influence Bezos in regards to the Washington Post, which he owns and whose op-ed page is often critical of President Donald Trump.

The National Enquirer's owner, David Pecker, is alleged to have helped buy off President Donald Trump's former mistresses prior to the election.

"The dust-up between Amazon.com Inc. founder Jeff Bezos and National Enquirer parent American Media LLC has raised questions about the media company’s connections to Saudi Arabia," the Wall Street Journal notes.
