National Guardsman deployed to US border arrested for sexually assaulting a female guard: report

A National Guard member has been arrested at the US border in Texas for the alleged sexual assault of a female guard with whom he was patrolling.

The Daily Beast reported that 30-year-old Luis Ontiveros was arrested after police in the town of Alpine, Texas responded to a call from the woman.

The woman who called the police is also in the National Guard and said Ontiveros was "severely intoxicated" when he "inappropriately touched" her.

Alpine Police Lieutenant Felipe Fierro told The Daily Beast that this is the first of such incidents to be reported since active troops began being stationed near the town 80 miles north of the US-Mexico border.

National Guard members have been deployed to the border to meet caravans of Latin American migrants seeking asylum in the United States. These caravans have been deemed an "invasion" by President Donald Trump and other Republicans, who brought them up repeatedly in the lead-up to the 2018 midterms.

The Guard confirmed to the Beast that about 2,100 troops are currently stationed at the border.
