'Massive deal for November': Trump behind push to change how key election state votes

Nebraska's Republican governor has joined Donald Trump in endorsing an effort to change how the state awards its Electoral College votes -- and the potential result could be a boon to the former president come November.

As HuffPost points out, Nebraska and Maine are the only states that split their Electoral College votes based on the popular vote statewide and in U.S. House districts -- which allowed President Joe Biden to win a single delegate after carrying Nebraska’s Second Congressional District.

But if Biden doesn't fully sweep the Upper Midwest or the Southern swing states that helped him win in 2020, "Democrats could, theoretically, combat the loss of an electoral vote in Nebraska by seeking to change the rules in Maine, where the inverse happened four years ago — Biden carried Maine, but Trump won a single congressional district," HuffPost's report stated.

Nebraska Gov. Jim Pillen announced his support this Tuesday of a bill proposed last year that would allow the state to return its pre-1992 winner-take-all system.

Trump followed suit in a post to Truth Social, saying, “Most Nebraskans have wanted to go back to this system for a very long time, because it’s what 48 other States do — It’s what the Founders intended, and it’s right for Nebraska."

Democrats subsequently mocked the idea.

“The only reason Gov. Pillen sent a release today is, the extremist Charlie Kirk sent a tweet that, of course, our governor jumped up to respond to,” Nebraska’s Democratic Party Chair Jane Kleeb told Semafor.

In a post to X, Nebraska state Sen. Megan Hunt wrote, Reporting live from the trenches — don’t worry, we aren’t getting rid of our unique electoral system in Nebraska. Legislatively there’s just no time. Nothing to worry about this year."

But according to Politico's Jonathan Lemire, the potential law could have big implications for Biden.

"If this becomes law, it is possibly a massive deal for November Because it means that if Biden can’t get the one electoral vote from the Omaha area, and he loses all the swing states except for WI, MI, PA - he would only get 269 His easiest path to 270 would be gone," Lemire wrote on X.
