'She needs to read the apology because she's not apologetic': Author of 'Black Ethics' slams Cindy Hyde-Smith

During the final debate in the U.S. Senate runoff election in Mississippi, interim Sen. Cindy Hyde-Smith (R-MS) lashed out at critics of her controversial remarks on public hangings, which were viewed in the context of the state's shameful history of lynchings.

MSNBC anchor Chris Hayes reported on the bizarre conditions Hyde-Smith imposed to participate in the debate, which included a ban on an audience and the press in the room.

Hayes also noted the Republican senator demanded a notepad, an hour before the debate, which she could then use.

After playing a clip of Hyde-Smith reading an awkward apology off of her notepad, Hayes turned to Fordham Prof. Christina Greer for analysis. Greer wrote the 2013 book Black Ethnics: Race, Immigration, and the Pursuit of the American Dream.

"She needs to read the apology because she's not apologetic," Greer noted.

"For her to make that comment -- not apologize for days on end -- and then need to read it, it's a double-bind," she added.
