Neil deGrasse Tyson: How can there be a God with 'an absence of benevolence' in the universe?

Cosmos and StarTalk host Neil deGrasse Tyson admits he does not know whether there is a God -- but he also questions how such a being could be "benevolent."

"If God is benevolent, I look at the universe and see asteroids rendering life extinct, there's an absence of benevolence in the actual universe that I see," he told TechInsider. "That's always been a point of contention between philosophers and theologians."

The astrophysicist, who first made a similar argument last month on the Nightly Show, also pointed out that, as online records show, there is a long list of deities that have been worshipped through the ages.

He also said that, while one can be certain within their own self as to the existence of a God, that even the deeply religious have some doubt.

"That's why [it's] called faith," deGrasse Tyson argued. "If you were certain there was a God, you wouldn't have to call it faith. It'd be some other activity."
