A number of MAGA figures are pleading with President Donald Trump Friday to intervene after the streaming giant Netflix announced it had reached an agreement to purchase Warner Bros. Discovery for $72 billion, warning that the acquisition would produce an endless “woke nightmare” for films and television.
“TRUMP MUST STOP THIS!” wrote Matt Gaetz, the former Republican congressman from Florida who left amid scandal, including allegations that he paid for sex with a 17-year-old.
“The [Justice Department] and Pam Bondi will surely see this as an anti-trust violation and deeply harmful to the marketplace. The most massive content distributor lashing to a massive content producer / catalog will create a homogenized, woke nightmare for the media landscape.”
Experts say that the massive acquisition could reshape the entertainment industry, and comes amid a flurry of mergers in the past several months that critics have called a sharp reversal of the Biden administration, which more frequently enforced antitrust laws. For instance, the Trump administration permitted the acquisition of U.S. Steel by a Japanese steel company in June, whereas the Biden administration blocked it when it was first proposed last year.
As to the Netflix acquisition, many seemingly pro-Trump critics weren’t happy with the news, and frequently cited fears of “wokeness” exploding under the new partnership.
“Do you solemnly swear to end wokeness in your projects?”
asked X user “Jen X,” a self-described “America-first patriot with nearly 35,000 followers. “Didn’t think so. Half the country won’t be coming back until you do. That $72B is gonna be heavy with half your audience gone.”
