A network of religious groups is offering undocumented immigrants sanctuary from ICE through safe houses: report

The ongoing battle between the state of California and Attorney General Jeff Sessions continues to escalate, with CNN's Out Front with Erin Burnett reporting on an underground network of safe houses being used to protect undocumented immigrants from President Donald Trump's Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

"Tonight some people in California are ready to wage war with President Trump, they are trying and willing to break the law to keep immigrants who are here in this country illegally hidden," Burnett reported.

CNN national Kyung Lah reported on one family who went underground. Though the family's two teenage girls are American citizens, their father was recently deported and their mother has an expired tourist visa.

"We became homeless for five months, we moved schools," one of the unidentified girls explained. "We were sleeping from house to house, anywhere we could find."

"Then they heard about an interfaith network of religious groups pledging to resist Trump's immigration policy," Lah explained. "By hiding them in safe houses, even in spare rooms of congregants' homes."

The undocumented family was taken in by an older Jewish woman, who cited the Holocaust in explaining her decision to take them in.

"This is technically aiding and abetting someone who is here undocumented," Lah noted.

"I don't see it that way," she replied. "I see it as taking a step to help someone in need, helping a family in need of support."

The network estimates dozen of families are receiving sanctuary in safe houses.
