Jim Riger Sr., the Republican candidate for Assembly District 24 in downtown Reno, Nevada, is claiming that he was hacked and that is how nude selfies made their way into the email accounts of party leader Kim Bacchus.
The “hack” is part of an extortion plot, Riger says, from someone who wants him out of the race. He denies that he sent the photos to Bacchus, according to the Reno Gazette-Journal.
Bacchus, however, says that the nude selfies came after Riger was included on a group email that was sent June 9. She got a response from Riger's email account saying “am not the right man dont vote for me (sic),” she said. The email also included the explicit selfies and photos of his genitalia.
“I don’t think he specifically sent that to me, I think he sent it to whoever sent out that general email,” she told the Gazette-Journal. “I didn’t feel like I was being targeted myself."
“I believe it’s in the best interest of the community that Mr. Riger step down from his candidacy,” she continued, mentioning that she filed a police report.
“The Nevada Republican Party has not worked with Jim Riger Sr. and will not be supporting him in any future capacity,” state GOP chair Michael McDonald said. “The actions displayed by this individual are both reprehensible and disgusting, and we condemn them in the strongest possible terms. There is no room for this kind of behavior in our party or our political process.”
Riger did confirm that the photos were of him but swears that he never sent them. He attributes the ordeal to being hacked multiple times.
“They’re telling me that they want me to quit running for the state Legislature and if not they’re going to go viral and send pictures,” Riger said of the hackers, and encouraged reporters to talk to the police department, who he says has documentation. The police, however, wouldn't discuss the details except to say that the investigation is ongoing.
Riger chalks the whole thing up to being Jewish and reminded people that he suffers from a traumatic brain injury as an Air National Guard veteran. His nude selfies were for the eyes of his online girlfriends only, he explained.
His Twitter account, on the other hand, was for public consumption and consists of a lot of pornographic retweets including photos of actress Ann Angel, whom Riger says is one of his online girlfriends. It was started in June 2015, but hasn't been active since August of that year. On June 14 he tweeted what appears to be an explicit photo of his genitals.
He does intend to remove himself from the race though he feels that doing so allows the extortionists to win in the end.
