Nevada state senator booted from legislature after threatening his wife

Las Vegas Democratic Assemblyman Steven Brooks, 40, is not welcome in the state legislature anymore following his arrest Sunday for allegedly threatening his wife.

Brooks was arrested January 19 on a felony charge after allegedly threatening Assembly Democratic Speaker Marilyn Kirkpatrick, then detained by police several days later on a domestic disturbance call at his grandmother's home.

An investigation was launched at that point and lawmakers began moving forward with plans to bar him from the legislature, and he was kicked out of the Democratic caucus.

After announcing last Thursday that he would take a three-week leave of absence, officers arrested Brooks on Sunday outside his wife's Las Vegas home. A police report claims he attempted to choke her and threw punches at police, then threatened his wife as he was being taken away.

That was the final straw for Brooks' colleagues, who voted Monday to amend the rules and prohibit him from reentering the legislature while an investigation is ongoing.

“We are concerned about the safety of people in the legislative buildings, as well as his ability to serve,” Assembly Majority Leader William Horne told The Associated Press. “It’s more than a distraction here for us being able to conduct our business.”
