New draft Trump executive order could be used to deport legal immigrants for using food stamps: report

The White House is reportedly sitting on executive orders that would seek to deport immigrants who are already living in the U.S. with documentation, the Washington Post reports.

"Our country’s immigration laws are designed to protect American taxpayers and promote immigrant self sufficiency. Yet households headed by aliens are much more likely than those headed by citizens to use Federal means-tested public benefits," reads one of the orders. It is titled, "Executive Order on Protecting Taxpayer Resources by Ensuring Our Immigration Laws Promote Accountability and Responsibility."

The draft relies on the assumption that "immigrant households are more likely to use welfare benefits," though no evidence is provided to support the claim.

Its enforcement would also rely heavily on the presumption that some individuals entering the country are more likely to rely on public assistance, specifically because the order notes the administration would "deny admission to any alien who is likely to become a public charge."

Another draft order titled "Executive Order on Protecting American Jobs and Workers by Strengthening the Integrity of Foreign Worker Visa Programs."

The White House did not respond to the Post's requests for comments on Monday or Tuesday.
