This New York electoral map would be House GOP's 'worst-case scenario': expert

Democrats in New York may soon get a more favorable electoral map after the New York State Court of Appeals sent the current map back to the state's Independent Redistricting Commission.

Dave Wasserman, an elections expert for Cook Political Report, has taken a stab at creating a map that he calls the "worst-case scenario" for House Republicans, and it would in theory give Democrats six additional seats — more than enough on its own to flip control of Congress.

"In this hypothetical, Dems could stretch the delegation from 15D-11R to 21D-5R via brute force — for example, Rep. Anthony D'Esposito's (R) would go from Biden +14 to Biden +22 and Rep. Mike Lawler's (R) would move from Biden +10 to Biden +15," he writes on Twitter.

Wasserman cautions, however, that such a map might never see the light of day given that courts would be more likely to see it as too partisan.

"It depends how much risk Albany Dems want to take," he writes. "NY's Court of Appeals ordered the redistricting process to start over again, but it didn't give a green light for a partisan gerrymander - and it's still conceivable a plan that overreaches could eventually get struck down."
