The conservative National Review editors criticized the Trump administration's response to the shooting death of 37-year-old Renee Good by an ICE agent Wednesday, directing particular criticism at Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem.
While supportive of the agent, identified as Jonathan Ross, for acting in self-defense because he believed his life was in danger, the editors expressed concern about how administration officials characterized the victim and the incident itself.
During her first press availability, Noem wore an oversized cowboy hat and claimed, "It was an act of domestic terrorism. They [ICE agents] were attempting to push out their vehicle and a woman attacked them and those surrounding them, and attempted to run them over and rammed them with her vehicle."
Noem has since held three additional press conferences, continuing to characterize the shooting as domestic terrorism—a characterization largely contradicted by available video evidence.
The National Review editors argued that the Trump administration's approach is counterproductive. "For its part, the Trump administration hasn't been content simply to say that the ICE officer feared for his life and acted in self-defense. Instead, they have called the incident domestic terrorism and suggested Good deliberately tried to run down the officer, which seems to be contradicted by the video evidence."
The editors stressed the importance of accurate representation: "ICE's mission is an important one; it deserves a serious, factual defense and shouldn't be a platform for Kristi Noem to constantly perform for the cameras."
