Congressman Devin Nunes (R-CA) was publicly called out for misusing 9-1-1 by beckoning police to shield him from constituents in his central valley congressional district.
"Clovis police were called and the building housing Congressman Devin Nunes’ office was locked during a rally for Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security on Tuesday," the Fresno Beereported.
Constituents were also protesting Rep. Nunes using his position as chair of the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence (HPSCI) to protect President Donald Trump from congressional scrutiny.
"Nunes is a puppet for Trump," argued Gene Roza of the California Alliance for Retired Americans. "We pay for [his office], we should have access to it.”
Police suggested it was actually a grey area, even though taxpayer funds rent the official office space from a private company.
"This isn’t a public building, even though he’s a public servant," said Clovis Police Cpl. Max Garces.
He also told the Fresno Bee that office staff have called 9-1-1 on protesters before.
Andrew Janz, the Democratic Primary nominee challenging Nunes in the 22nd congressional district, applauded the Clovis Police Department for, "keeping the peace and allowing demonstrators to exercise their 1st Amendment rights."
"Nunes’ people keep calling the police wasting law enforcement resources. This is not what 911 was designed for," Janz explained. "Nunes’ office is public property paid for by us."
