'N****r leave:' racist defaces centuries old African meeting house in Massachusetts

A historic building where escaped slaves once found shelter was defaced in Nantucket, the Boston Globe reports.

The African Meeting House in Nantucket dates to 1827 and was once a school house, church and meeting house when the island was segregated. It became a museum in 1999.

"Someone spray-painted "n****r leave" and what appeared to be a penis on the building overnight.

The racist graffiti was found at 7 am, and residents of the tony island and city employees gathered to clean it up.

A state senator representing the area also condemned the act in strong words, calling it "racist terror."
