Obama mocks Tea Partiers: I cut your taxes, so thank me

The irony of Tea Partiers protesting high taxes after most of their taxes had been reduced wasn't lost on President Barack Obama.

At a Democratic fundraiser in Miami on tax day, the president said he was "amused" by the theme of the rallies held by furious protesters across the nation.

"I've been a little amused over the last couple of days where people have been having these rallies about taxes," Obama said, to laughter and applause from the audience. "You would think they would be saying thank you. That's what you'd think."

The crowd lapped it up.

Obama pointed out, as he often has, that he made good on his campaign promise and "cut taxes for 95 percent of working Americans" -- a policy he implemented early in his presidency through the stimulus.

He said the Recovery Act also offered tax relief for small businesses and parents whose children are in college, proclaiming the effort "strengthened the cornerstone of the American Dream."

Americans making over $250,000 a year will see tax increases under the Obama plan, but the nation is largely misinformed about what's happened to most peoples' rates under the new president.

A CBS/New York Times poll in February found that a mere 12 percent of Americans believed their taxes have been slashed. Among Tea Partiers, a mere 2 percent realized this fact.

"In all, we passed 25 different tax cuts last year," the president said.

Obama's mockery of the Tea Party, which has shown intense and often personal anger towards him, reflects an unusual posturing for a president who has mostly sought to strike the chords of unity and bipartisanship.

The event, along with one other fundraiser, raised $2.5 million for the Democratic National Committee, reported the Associated Press.
