The cast of Jersey Shore aren't the only ones basking in Miami Beach's largess.
President Barack Obama is hosting a $30,400-a-couple fundraiser tonight at the Miami Beach mansion of Cuban-born singer Gloria Estefan. The soirée is expected to raise $2.5 million for the Democratic National Committee.
You probably didn't hear about it from the Washington press corps; these types of events happen almost every week. But while Republicans take most of the rap for big money contributions, they're not alone.
Estefan's Miami Beach mansion was the subject of a 2006 Oprah Winfrey exclusive (slideshow here). ("I love to be surrounded by water," Estefan told Winfrey during the televised tour of her home. Her dining room furniture, she said, is made from temples in India. At left is Estefan's "Pleasure Dome," a room fitted with candles and his and her bathrooms.)
Obama's appearance is drawing ire from the some of the Cuban community in Miami, which has generally supported Republicans. The GOP generally takes more of a hard-line stance against the communist island.
The former executive director of the Cuban American National Foundation -- a Democrat -- had a different spin.
"He's coming down here meeting with a very diverse group of folks,'' Cuban activist Joe Garcia said.
Diverse, apparently, among the $15,000-a-person crowd.
Can't afford the $30,400 a couple billing? Obama will also be speaking at another fundraiser on the same leg of his trip at the downtown Miami performing arts center.
Tickets are only $1,250.
Obama's South Florida fundraisers come on the heels of a stop at Cape Canaveral, where he delivers a speech on the future of the US space program.
