Obama’s Tea Party cousin joins ‘big black scary gun community’ with pre-campaign rifle buy

Barack Obama’s Tea Party cousin bought a firearm six months before announcing his primary run for the U.S. Senate.

Milton Wolf, a Leawood physician who’s challenging Sen. Pat Roberts (R-KS) in the Republican primary, likes to boast during his campaign speeches that he bought a lifetime membership to the National Rifle Association and favors a particular weapon.

"My firearm of choice is the Ruger SR-556," Wolf says at campaign events. "I have hatred towards no man — only towards bad government that destroys our freedom."

But the Topeka Capital-Journal reported that he initially made that choice just last year.

Ann Hodgdon, a prominent Kansas Republican, told the newspaper her husband sold a pair of matching carbine rifles to Wolf, who later sent an email of thanks.

"Thanks again for helping (wife) Karrie and me get into the big black scary gun community," Wolf said in the email. "We'd love to give them a test drive with you guys sometime soon."

But Hodgdon said she thinks Wolf’s sudden love for firearms is just an act – and a troublesome one, at that.

“It bothers me when people feel they have to own sexy guns to be a Second Amendment patriot,” she said. “It was part of Milton Wolf creating an image for himself. He's playing a role.”

Wolf is a second cousin once removed of the president who became involved in politics after criticizing the Affordable Care Act and becoming a Washington Times columnist.

He repeatedly attacks Obama on the campaign trail, usually by mentioning guns.

Wolf also sparked controversy last month when he posted gruesome X-rays of gunshot victims on his Facebook account and joked about them.
