Officer who stopped Sandra Bland for lane change indicted by grand jury for perjury

A grand jury in Waller County, Texas indicted the state trooper who arrested Sandra Bland on Wednesday for perjury, the Houston Chronicle reported.

Brian Encinia's indictment came after the jury reconvened to review the lack of indictments connected to the case. Bland died in jail three days after being arrested in July 2015.

Bland's death was ruled a suicide, which her family has questioned. Authorities later suggested the family contributed to her death by not paying the $515 necessary to release her on bail.

Her death fueled a series of protests against excessive use of force by police against communities of color, including a Black Lives Matter demonstration against presidential candidates Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) and Martin O'Malley at the Netroots Nation conference in Phoenix. Bland's family later filed a wrongful death suit against the county.

Update, 5:59 p.m. EST:Think Progress reported that Encinia was indicted for falsely stating on his report that he pulled Bland out of her car during their initial encounter.
