Oklahoma lawmakers just approved a shockingly ‘insane’ abortion ban that would make doctors felons

The Oklahoma state legislature passed complete ban of abortions, in contradiction of federal law, Tulsa World reports.

The bill, now making its way to Oklahoma Gov. Mary Fallin on Thursday, makes it a felony for doctors to perform abortions and also revokes their medical licenses for doing so.

The bill passed the Senate with a 33-12 vote, with no debate, Tulsa World reports.

The lone physician serving on the state Senate, Ervin Yen, called the measure "insane" and added it would without doubt be challenged in court. Courts have in the past thrown out legislation by Oklahoma lawmakers to put additional restrictions of abortion.

The bill was authored by Broken Arrow Republican state Sen. Nathan Dahm.

The Associated Press reports the law is the first of its kind in the nation and would punish physicians with up to three years in prison for performing the procedures.

While reproductive rights advocates call the bill unconstitutional, Dahm says he hopes it will lead to the overturn of the landmark Roe v. Wade decision, in which the Supreme Court ruled that American women have the right to get abortions.

Oklahoma is facing a $1.3 billion budget shortfall, with state agencies like schools, mental health and human services taking a $235 million hit in spending cuts, KFOR reports.

Last year, Democratic Rep. Cory Williams criticized fellow lawmakers for passing controversial bills that result in costly, losing litigation.

'It`s not our job to pass constitutional laws.' If I had a quarter every time I heard that in the last 7 years that I've been here, I`d be pretty well off," Williams told KFOR.
