Attorney General Pam Bondi suggested that the release of files related to Jeffrey Epstein could be delayed after President Donald Trump ordered a new investigation into Democrats connected to the sex offender.
During a press conference on Wednesday, Bondi was asked about whether she would comply with a bill to release the Epstein files after Trump committed to signing it into law.
"The law passed both chambers last evening. It has not yet been signed, but we will continue to follow the law again while protecting victims, but also providing maximum transparency," Bondi insisted.
One reporter noted that Bondi had released a memo earlier this year stating that there was insufficient evidence to "predicate an investigation against uncharged third parties." It also said that the FBI determined "that no further disclosure would be appropriate or warranted."
"What changed since then that you launched this investigation?" the reporter wondered.
"Uh, information that has come forward," Bondi stuttered. "There's information that... new information, additional information, and again, we will continue to follow the law, to investigate any leads."
In a post on X last week, the attorney general did not suggest there was any new information when she revealed that she was opening a new investigation into Epstein-connected Democrats at the president's urging.
"What new information, and would you limit the new investigation to just those named persons that the president talked about, or is this a broad, open-ended investigation?" Bondi was asked on Wednesday.
"We're not going to say anything else on that because now it is a pending investigation in the Southern District of New York," she insisted.
