Google is failing me, but there was a study, once, that claimed that English prime ministerial elections could be predicted by the primary color of the team which won the English First Division/Premier League the preceding year. If the winner was Manchester United or Liverpool (red), it'd be a Tory. If Chelsea (Blue) or Derby County (White) took the title, Labour would take power. And if Manchester City (Light Blue), a Liberal Democrat would win, but that would hardly matter since the apocalypse would be upon us.

Politics and football/soccer are not miles apart in any country but ours. Luis Suarez, a Uruguayan currently playing in the Netherlands, said "In Latin America the border between soccer and politics is vague. There is a long list of governments that have fallen or been overthrown after the defeat of the national team." In Italy and elsewhere, team loyalties can literally depend on whether you're a fascist or a communist.

But none of that is the real reason that, by the initiative of Marc Faletti-friend-of-Pandagon, we've started a new soccer blog, primarily covering the English Premier League and international competitions. No, that's mainly because we (the bloggers of Pandagoal; we'll introduce them in a later post) love soccer. Except Jesse, who's gonna watch his first match any day now.

The Premier League season starts this Saturday, but there's already a long line of posts (we knew we were launching today, but no one seemed to be able to wait...) and we really hope that those Pandagonians who are soccer/football fans will make it a regular stop. And we hope that those of you who aren't will get some taste right quick.
