Papadopoulos says Sessions supported Putin campaign meeting and then lied about it to investigators: report

According to documents filed by attorneys for a former campaign aide to Donald Trump, the president "nodded" approval when it was suggested that he meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin prior to the 2016 presidential election.

USA Today reports that the lawyers for George Papadopoulos submitted a document where the lawyers say Papadopoulos was hired by the campaign in March 2016 despite having no experience with Russian or U.S. diplomacy. While in Italy, Papadopoulos met with a London-based professor who introduced him to a woman described as a Putin relative who claimed to have access to “dirt” on former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.

“Eager to show his value to the campaign,” defense lawyers wrote, Papadopoulos suggested during a meeting with Trump and his foreign policy advisers that he could set up a meeting between Trump and Putin.

“While some in the room rebuffed George’s offer, Mr. Trump nodded with approval and deferred to Mr. Sessions who appeared to like the idea and stated that the campaign should look into it,” defense lawyers continued.

The reference to Session is current Attorney General Jeff Sessions who later told Senate investigators that he had no knowledge of Russian involvement in Trump's 2016 presidential campaign on which he was an adviser.
