Parents bought guns for suicidal teen -- who went on to become Freeman High School mass shooter

The father of a teenage school shooter in Washington state bought guns for him, according to a police report.

Caleb Sharpe, 15, allegedly killed one student and wounded three more Wednesday morning at Freeman High School in Spokane County. Sam Strahan died after being shot in the head, while Emma Nees, Jordyn Goldsmith and Gracie Jensen were wounded as Sharpe allegedly fired into a crowd of students. A school custodian stopped the rampage by tackling and disarming him.

"These are senseless and tragic events that really don’t need to happen,” Spokane County Sheriff Ozzie Knezovich said Wednesday at a news conference. "And I don’t understand them. We need to figure out what’s going on in society that children think they need to take weapons to deal with the issues they’re facing."

According to a police report obtained by Melissa Luck of KXLY 4 News, Sharpe was having suicidal thoughts and brought guns to school to try to "teach everyone a lesson" about bullying. He said he didn't target anyone specifically.

"He's been in the care of a school counselor for suicidal ideations. He got the guns from his father's large gun safe, located at their home. He is familiar with the operation of firearms. Today he decided to bring guns to school including a rifle which was stored in his large duffel bag and a handgun inside his coat pocket."

Sharpe abandoned the rifle after it "immediately" jammed, the police report stated, and pulled the handgun out of his coat. He used the handgun to shoot Strahan after the student remarked "I always knew you were going to shoot up the school."

Sharpe also told officers that he liked to build bombs in his basement. His parents apparently provided him with firearms. "Caleb has a gun safe in the basement storage room and says his dad buys guns for him," according to the police report.

The Spokesman Review reported that Sharpe had a YouTube channel in which he posted videos of himself playing with guns.

“We knew he had an assault rifle, because he uses it in his YouTube videos,” Paul Fricke, a junior at the school, told the Review.

According to Heavy, Sharpe posted anti-feminist memes to his social media pages.
