Trump's embattled watchdog nominee withdraws after pro-Nazi texts leaked

Paul Ingrassia, President Donald Trump's controversial pick to lead the Office of Special Counsel, has withdrawn from consideration after a series of bombshell scandals that rendered Republican senators unwilling to advance his nomination.

The news was broken by Seung Min Kim of The Associated Press on Tuesday evening.

This comes after a number of Republicans, including Sen. Ron Johnson (R-WI), expressed opposition to Ingrassia's nomination, all but eliminating his path forward.

Ingrassia, a writer for right-wing news outlets who served as a liaison for the Department of Homeland Security, has grappled with a number of controversies, including an accusation that he canceled a female colleague's hotel room so she’d have to stay with him.

But the likely final blow to his nomination was a recent leak of his extremely racist text messages, in which he attacked the idea of Martin Luther King Jr. having a holiday and proclaimed himself to have a "Nazi streak."
