Paul Ryan laments Obamacare repeal failure by reciting ‘Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald’

House Speaker Paul Ryan (R-WI) recited the lyrics to a mournful Gordon Lightfoot song about a shipwreck to lament the failure of Republican efforts to repeal the Affordable Care Act.

Ryan met behind closed doors with other House Republicans hours after Sen. John McCain joined two outspoken GOP opponents of the repeal measure, where he compared the doomed bill to "The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald," reported Politico.

The House Speaker then recited a few lines from the doleful 1976 Lightfoot hit detailing the wreck of the SS Edmund Fitzgerald a year before, "when the gales of November came early" on Lake Superior, and the ship's crew of 29 perished.

It's not clear which lines Ryan recited from the song.

Ryan complained that infamously quarrelsome House Republicans were now the most functional part of the GOP-dominated government, the website reported.

Tea Party Rep. Mo Brooks (R-AL) called for Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) to step down after failing to repeal the Affordable Care Act after House Republicans passed a similar bill in May.

“We need new leadership in the United State Senate,” said Brooks, who's running for the U.S. Senate seat vacated by Attorney General Jeff Sessions. “If Mitch McConnell cannot get the job done, then those 52 senators need to get together and try to figure out who amongst them has the leadership capability to get the job done.”
