Pelosi asks Trump to ditch the State of the Union until the government reopens

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has asked President Donald Trump to move the date of his planned State of the Union address until after the federal government reopens.

In her letter, Pelosi cited security concerns caused by Trump's shutdown as a justification for delaying the address, which was scheduled to take place on January 29th.

"Sadly, given the security concerns and unless the government reopens this week, I suggest that we work together to determine another suitable date after government has reopened for this address," she wrote.

Pelosi also suggested to Trump that he could deliver his address in writing to Congress on January 29th, and she informed him that State of the Union addresses were often delivered to Congress in writing throughout most of the 19th century.

Additionally, Pelosi pointed out that no State of the Union speech has ever been delivered in the middle of a government shutdown.
