Petition to cancel Brexit quickly blows past 1 million signatures and crashes UK Parliament’s website

On Thursday, British Prime Minister Theresa May arrived in Brussels to negotiate the country's departure from the European Union, which continues to be delayed as lawmakers hammer out the details of the plan.

"A short extension gives us that opportunity to decide to leave the European Union, to deliver on that result of that referendum and I sincerely hope that will be with a negotiated deal," May said upon her arrival in Brussels.

As world leaders struggled to figure out how to enact Brexit, a petition to cancel the plan got so much support online that it crashed the UK Parliament's website, Bloomberg reports.

After celebrities like Annie Lennox and Hugh Grant endorsed the petition, 870,000 people signed on demanding that the government cancel Brexit.

“The rate of signing is the highest the site has ever had to deal with,” the House of Commons petitions committee said on Twitter. “Between 80,000 and 100,000 people have been simultaneously viewing the petition,” it said, “nearly 2,000 signatures are being completed every minute.”

The petition's success undermines the idea that Brexit represents the will of the British public.

“The government repeatedly claims exiting the EU is ‘the will of the people,”’ the text says. “We need to put a stop to this claim by proving the strength of public support now, for remaining in the EU.”

Actor Hugh Grant explained why he supports the action.

“I’ve signed. And it looks like every sane person in the country is signing too,” he posted on Twitter. “National emergency. Revoke Article 50 and remain in the EU.”
