'This place is a snake pit': CNN conservative says 'addled' Trump has only himself to blame for vicious infighting

David Frum, a former speechwriter for George W. Bush, told CNN on Friday that President Donald Trump has no one but himself to blame for his own administration's culture of infighting and leaking.

As Frum explained to CNN's Alisyn Camerota, Trump's management style fosters mistrust and backbiting in the White House that results in staffers constantly leaking dirt to the press.

"Remember the story about a White House staffer saying hurtful things about the imminent death of Senator John McCain," he said. "That was leaked by another staffer, who incidentally did a lot of damage to the administration, who was actually just trying to setting some private vendetta. This place is a snake pit and it's a snake pit because the president raises snakes."

Elsewhere in the discussion, Frum excoriated former Trump economic adviser Gary Cohn for keeping quiet for so long about the president's mental unfitness for the presidency.

"Gary Cohn... literally snatched a paper off the president's desk that would have voided a U.S.-South Korea trade deal, the president then forgot about it," he said. "The idea that you would leave the White House and then fulminate about this to Bob Woodward months after the fact but not alert the world that... the president is so addled that if a piece of paper disappears from his desk, he forgets that it was ever there."
