Michigan rep who denied 2020 election 'prepared to step up' for speakership: report

House Republicans are looking to nominate United States Representative Jack Bergman (R-Michigan) for the speakership, as Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan's (R-Ohio) pursues the gavel for a third time, Politico reports.

The Detroit Free Press reports Bergman, "like the rest of Michigan's GOP congressional delegation" backs ex-President Donald Trump's 2024 campaign.

The newspaper notes that the Michigan lawmaker "was one of three members of Michigan's congressional delegation who voted unsuccessfully to reject the Arizona and Pennsylvania results from the 2020 presidential election."

Politico reports Bergman spokesperson James Hogge said, "If as a conference we see he can't get the necessary votes to become Speaker, General Bergman is prepared to step up. The General isn't seeking to climb the ladder, only steady it in a time of chaos — and would only seek to be Speaker for the remainder of the 118th Congress."

According to Detroit Free Press, the Michigan GOP leader voted for Jordan twice this week, writing on X (formerly Twitter) Monday, "We need a leader to step up to unite the Republican conference, actually pass critical legislation, and move our nation forward."

Politico notes Jordan promised to persist in the race despite the fact "Republicans are predicting that he could lose even more votes on a third ballot."
