Pro-Islamic hackers hijack Maryland TV station and New Mexico newspaper's Twitter feeds

Pro-Islamic State hackers took over the website and Twitter accounts of a Maryland news station and the Twitter feed of The Albuquerque Journal.

Hackers from the CyberCaliphate on Tuesday took over WBOC-TV’s Twitter account and website, which displayed the Islamist group’s black-and-white flag and a message saying, “I love you, ISIS.”

The station quickly regained control of its website, but the Twitter account remained under the hackers’ control through Wednesday afternoon.

CyberCaliphate also briefly took over the Twitter feed for The Albuquerque Journal and posted photos of driver’s licenses belonging to New Mexico residents and warnings about future personal data breaches.

The newspaper regained control of the social media account by Tuesday afternoon.

The Journal’s website was hacked Christmas Eve and its main story was replaced by supportive messages for Islamic State extremists.

Investigators aren’t certain the hackers are affiliated with the Islamic State group or simply pranksters seeking attention.

The incidents remain under investigation, and WBOC reported that the FBI told station managers that "similar attacks have been quietly happening to media companies across the United States."
