Protest chic: Designer Vivienne Westwood joins successful anti-fracking demonstration

Famed fashion designer Vivienne Westwood was among hundreds of protestors who have managed to temporarily stop a purported fracking excavation in a British village.

"It's just storing up for the future, near future even, with financial problems and ultimately, you know, we'll all fry," Westwood told Sky News on Friday during the protest in Balcombe, West Sussex, where demonstrators have set up a camp on a farm near the planned excavation site.

The firm operating on the site, Quadrilla, agreed with a police suggestion to stop test drilling for oil. A company spokesperson told the BBC that fracking would require a different authorization from its current activities.

Ken Cronin, the head of the UK Onshore Operators Group, which represents the United Kingdom's oil and energy interest, criticized the demonstrators, who have been entrenched at the site for three weeks.

"It is not right that the onshore oil and gas industry has to deal with threats of direct action, intimidation and 'mass civil disobedience' against our staff and property, which prevent us carrying out our lawful operations," Cronin told the BBC.
