Protests continue in NYC after slain boy's funeral

Coinciding with the funeral of Kimani Gray on Saturday, peaceful protests against the New York Police Department continued throughout Brooklyn.

The death of 16-year-old Gray on March 9 ignited a community firestorm over the tactics of the NYPD, whose officers shot the teenager more than half a dozen times because he was allegedly brandishing a pistol. Gray's family disputes the police report, which includes no other eyewitnesses, and are calling for an independent investigation.

Protests and vigils held on March 14 in Brooklyn saw dozens of people arrested, businesses attacked and "infighting" amongst demonstrators.

The peaceful protests on March 23, however, matched the somber tone of Gray's funeral, as well as a wake attended by more than 1,000 people.

'This is an issue that if we stay silent about it, it's just going to continue to happen," said one protestor.

For many demonstrators, Gray's death at the hands of two plainclothes police officers shows the dangerous, and often racist, effects of controversial policing tactics. One of the biggest issues, for which many believe led to Gray's death, is the "stop-and-frisk" tactic that allows police officers to detain anyone without any evidence a crime is being committed.
