Proud Boys founder Gavin McInnes denied entry to Australia for 'Deplorables' speaking tour

Proud Boys founder Gavin McInnes was denied entry to Australia after his visa application was blocked.

The right-wing provocateur failed the character test required by the Home Affairs Department and won't be allowed to tour Australia as part of the "Deplorables" tour with British far-right activist Tommy Robinson, reported the Australian Broadcast Company.

McInnes, a Canadian national who lives in New York, cut ties with the Proud Boys this month, after reports emerged that the FBI had designated the organization he founded as an "extremist group with ties to white nationalism."

The former Vice Media co-founder had long insisted the Proud Boys were not a racist group but was instead a men's organization committed to upholding "Western chauvinist values."

McInnes had been told the Australian government would likely block his visa application over his character, and the formal window for him to appeal closed Friday.

"For visitors who may hold controversial views, any risk they may pose will be balanced against Australia's well-established freedom of speech and freedom of beliefs, amongst other relevant considerations," said a spokeswoman for the Department of Home Affairs.

No visa application was received for Robinson, who was planning to tour Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide, Perth and the Gold Coast early next year with McInnes.
