Putin convinced Trump that Comey had framed Russia for hacking the DNC: NYT reporter

New York Times reporter David Sanger went on CNN Thursday to discuss new revelations about President Donald Trump taking the word of Russian President Vladimir Putin over his own intelligence agencies.

During an interview with hosts John Berman and Alisyn Camerota, Sanger said that Trump had called him the day after he had a meeting with Putin in Germany and told him he didn't think Russia had really hacked into the Democratic National Committee's email servers.

"He said, 'Vladimir Putin told me it couldn't have been the Russians who hacked into the DNC because they're so good at cyber that they wouldn't have been caught,'" he said, summarizing Trump's argument. "He said he was really impressed by that argument!"

Sanger went on to explain why Trump refused to believe American intelligence agencies' assessment that Russian operatives were behind the hack.

"The intelligence reports all indicate that not only was Putin aware of it, Putin ordered it," Sanger said. "He said, 'How could I possibly believe it, that came from Comey, that came from Brennan, that came from Clapper, they're all political hacks.'"
