QAnon candidate cites ‘nasal deformity’ in lawsuit challenging mask requirement at school board forums
A Colorado school board candidate has filed a lawsuit challenging the district's mask requirement at campaign forums — alleging she has a "nasal deformity."
Schumé Navarro, a self-avowed follower of the QAnon conspiracy movement who recently received the Colorado GOP's 2021 Rising Star Award, is alleging that Cherry Creek Schools violated the Americans with Disabilities Act by requiring her to wear a mask.
"In court documents, Navarro said she has two diagnosed disabilities that prevent her from wearing a mask, and therefore, prevent her from participating in candidate forums where masks are required," Denver's NBC affiliate reports. "Her conditions, the complaint said, stem from trauma suffered as a child that now prompts panic when her mouth and nose are covered. Navarro said she also has a nasal deformity that makes breathing difficult, regardless of a mask."
Navarro, who reportedly filmed herself within feet of the Capitol after former president Donald Trump's "Stop the Steal" rally on Jan. 6, claims she has missed two candidate forums because of the mask requirement. At an another forum, she claims she had difficulty breathing and suffered "substantial anxiety" after putting on a district-provided mask, which she called an "overwhelming distraction."
During the forum where she wore a mask, Navarro reportedly made a racist remark. When discussing disparities for students of color, she suggested they were "better at other things than learning," the station reported.
"Some people have a different skill set than academics," Navarro said, referring to students of color, before complaining that she couldn't think because she was struggling with her mask.
"Navarro has gained a following in conservative circles because of that opposition to masks and for promoting QAnon conspiracy theories, saying that President Joe Biden was fraudulently elected in a 'coup' by China linked to the COVID-19 pandemic," the station reports. "After being in Washington, D.C. during the Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol, she also described 'all-out war' with satanic communism."
