Donald Trump's apparent change of heart about not inviting Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) to a White House picnic should be viewed with skepticism according to one MSNBC host.
On Wednesday, the Kentucky Republican told reporters that he and his family were banned from the social gathering of lawmakers of both parties in retaliation for his opposition to the "big beautiful budget bill."
“They’re afraid of what I’m saying, so they think they’re going to punish me, I can’t go to the picnic, as if somehow that’s going to make me more conciliatory,” he claimed. “So it’s silly, in a way, but it’s also just really sad that this is what it’s come to. But petty vindictiveness like this, it makes you — it makes you wonder about the quality of people you’re dealing with.”
Thursday morning, Trump offered an invite on Truth Social, writing, "Of course Senator Rand Paul and his beautiful wife and family are invited to the BIG White House Party tonight. He’s the toughest vote in the history of the U.S. Senate, but why wouldn’t he be?"
He then added, "Besides, it gives me more time to get his Vote on the Great, Big, Beautiful Bill, one of the greatest and most important pieces of legislation ever put before our Senators & Congressmen/women. It will help to MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN! I look forward to seeing Rand. The Party will be Great!"
According to MSNBC's Rev. Al Sharpton, Paul should be wary given Trump's recent invitations to world leaders from Ukraine, South Africa and Germany who were put on the spot by the president in front of the press.
Speaking with "Morning Joe " co-host Jonathan Lemire, Sharpton offered, "Be careful what you ask for, because somehow a Trump party might all be about just Trump trying to bash the senator in a cordial but direct way."
He then added, "So I would stay tuned and watch what happens tonight."
