Rep. McDermott informs Republicans: The 'deficit boogey man' isn't real

Congressman Jim McDermott (D-WA) lashed out at his Republican colleagues on Wednesday over a plan to cut America's food stamp program.

The GOP-backed proposal would cut the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program by $39 billion over the next decade. The plan would drop 3.8 million low-income Americans from the program in 2014, according to the Congressional Budget Office.

McDermott, a progressive Democrat, attacked Republicans on the House floor for targeting those in need. He said SNAP funding would decrease as the economy improved, and accused Republicans of having "stupid" rhetoric about welfare abuse.

"We are again catering to fringe agenda thought up by partisans obsessed with the deficit boogey man," he said. "That boogey man has been roaming around here for four years. 'We're going to have a terrible collapse, we're going to have inflation, we're going to have terrible things.' And it has never happened."

McDermott said Republicans were only concerned with being challenged by a more conservative candidate. He advised them to stop "worrying about scoring points with the Heritage Foundation."
