Reporter blows the lid off Ivanka's image as a 'moderating influence' on Trump: 'It doesn't exist'

Although first daughter Ivanka Trump has been described as a "moderating" influence on President Donald Trump, one reporter who has written a lengthy profile of her says that it's all a myth.

Appearing on CNN Friday, The Atlantic's Elaina Plott said that her reporting has found that Ivanka from a very young age has defined her identity in good part from how much approval she receives from her famous father.

"When her parents divorced -- in a very public, tabloid-based manner -- when she was 9 years old, it really jarred her in a way it would any child," she said. "Ivanka decided that she was only going to see her father as good and do whatever it took to earn his affection."

As part of her research, Plott looked for concrete examples of ways that Ivanka had stopped her father from enacting an extreme policy that she believed went too far -- and she came up empty.

"I remember thinking, 'Okay, we see Ivanka and her husband Jared as moderating influences on this president,'" she said. "I was trying to dig up where the first time was that she might have said she was pro-choice, for example, or that she was a huge activist when it came to climate change. And it just didn't exist. It's just nowhere."
